Unless you live in outer space, you’re probably aware that this May sees the first coronation of a new British monarch since 1953, as King Charles III is crowned at Westminster Abbey. Whatever your views on the institution, it’s undeniably a moment of national history – and any change on this scale is an opportunity for reflection. The Britain of 2023 – diverse, vibrant and multicultural – certainly looks different from how it did in the 1950s (though right now some of that hard-won progress feels all too fragile). But so many big questions about our future, and where the country is going, remain – and theatre can be the perfect forum to explore and debate those issues.
