If only the '#Me Too' revolution had hit the theatres during the Restoration period, the actresses might have had a better time of it. Mind you, Nell Gwyn didn't do too badly, ending up as King Charles II's mistress with all the perks that position entailed!
But in the main, Restoration actresses were treated no better than the performing bears in the pits on which the playhouses were eventually built.
Wanstead Players' Production of Playhouse Creatures by April de Angelis offers a glimpse behind the scenes as actresses began sticking up for their rights and even demanding better payment for their efforts.
Playhouse Creatures is earthy, bawdy and a lot of fun. Running from Thursday May 23rd to Saturday 25th in the Cowan Studio at the Kenneth More Theatre in Ilford, it is a treat not to be missed.
Evening performances start at 7.30pm and there is a Saturday matinee at 3pm which is also a signed performance.
