‘There’s no Business like Show Business’ at Woodley Light Operatic Society! So this December, ‘Be our Guest’ and come and help the society celebrate “50 Musical Years”
Since first forming in 1968, Woodley Light Operatic Society has entertained the people of Woodley with at least two musical theatre productions a year – almost 100 musicals conceived, rehearsed and brought to the stage for everyone to enjoy. Now, that is something worth celebrating!
So, take a trip with us down memory lane as iconic songs from ever-popular musicals come to life. Oklahoma! – a firm favourite with the Society, having been staged once every decade of its existence – tests the spelling abilities of the cast whilst singing! Calamity Jane, hot on its heels with four performances in the 50 Years, blows in with a soft shoe shuffle from the Windy City. Whilst The Boyfriend and My Fair Lady – both of which have been staged three times – enable the cast to find their poshest accents as they endeavour to mimic the upper classes.
The Society also has a history of discovering some beautiful, complex and occasionally risqué pieces of music. ‘Bethlehem’ from Martin Guerre and ‘Two Ladies’ from Cabaret are just two of the songs chosen to represent this facet of its history... you decide which one is the risqué one!
No convention of the Society’s history would be complete without that staple of amateur theatre groups – Gilbert and Sullivan. These witty songs are surprisingly up-to-date in their political comment, as well as providing some challenging vocal work for chorus and principals alike. This time the cast will take you on a ‘Strange Adventure’ into the world of Yeomen of the Guard.
Topping it all off are some spectacular dance routines and sparkling costumes. So, why not come and enjoy the ‘Rhythm of Life’ with us. Remember that ‘Anything Goes’, ‘Love makes the world go round’ and, with this society, ‘You’ll never walk alone!’
