Verdi’s powerful music enhances the dramatic intensity of this dark tale, the brooding atmosphere captured perfectly by the intimacy of the Electric Theatre. Placing the witches at the core of the drama makes for wild and exciting choruses set against the chilling arias of psychological disintegration as Macbeth and his Lady are forced to confront their ghosts and their “ugly secrets”.
The strong cast is headed by Chris Childs Santos (Macbeth) and
Laura Wolk Lewanowicz (Lady Macbeth) with Kevin John (Macduff), Guido Smeets (Malcolm) and Michael Christie (Banquo). Sidonie Winter sings the role of Gentlewoman.
Guildford Opera’s contemporary setting is fully staged, with orchestra and sung in English.
