Our drama group came about when, in November of 1976, a group of friends (primarily Mary and Kevin Anthony, and Lily and John Brolly) decided it would be fun to put on a pantomime. The first show hit the boards in February of 1977: 'Cinderella'. It was a terrific success with both the players and the audience, and that was all the encouragement our founders needed to plan a production for the next year, and the next year, and the next... It also began a trend that has lasted until the present - Cinderella was written by Mary Anthony - and we are still writing our own pantomimes today: most are by the writing/directing team of Jenny and Byron Rees, and their shows, based on traditional pantomimes, are full of colour and excitement, renowned for the great plots, terrific characters and, most of all, FUN! Over the years we have become more ambitious, adding musical shows, full-length and one-act plays to our repertoire, participating in drama festivals since 1984 and winning over 80 awards to date for all aspects of our craft: 1st, 2nd & 3rd placings, acting, directing, stage presentation, backstage teamwork and writing - our resident playwright Kathy Mead's plays are festival winners and over a dozen of them have been published after receiving their premieres with our group. When we began we were called St. Cedd's Players, named after the church hall in Goodmayes, Essex, that was our base for 23 years; it was in 1998 that we moved to our new home, St. George's Hall in Gants Hill, and changed our name to Dragon Theatre Company.
